Day 1

·      Coaches National Museum - Museu Nacional dos Coches
Located in the old horse riding-school and founded in 1905 by the last Portugal’s Queen, D. Amélia de Orleans e Bragança, the Coaches National Museum has a unique collection of the royal vehicles from century XVII and XIX. It has as well several accessories related to horse riding and a collection of portraits with the kings of the last royal Portuguese dynasty.

·      Jerónimos Monastery - Mosteiro dos Jerónimos 
The construction of this monastery began in 1501, after the decision of D.Manuel I to re-establish the headquarters of the Ordem de S. Jerónimo( The Order of Saint Jeronimo) in the the Belem area, and was only finished a century after. Built in a fascinating combination of late-baroque and the Renaissance styles in the 16th century, the Monastery celebrates the country’s Age of Discovery.
Interiors present unique masterpieces of “Manueline” decoration along with the symbolic tombs of worldwide famous poet Luis de Camoes and the navigator Vasco de Gama. In Jeronimos Monastery are also the Archeology and Navy Museums and in 1984 it was considered Cultural Heritage of All Humanity by Unesco.

·      Belém Cultural Center - CCB
The Belém Cultural Center is the largest building with cultural facilities in Portugal which includes some complex areas such as an auditorium for opera, ballet, symphony concerts and congresses. So we suggest you to go to this center because you can do a big variety of activities in there.

In the Afternoon:

Monument of Discoveries - Padrão dos Descobrimentos
  In Belém you can also visit this monument that celebrates the Portuguese who took part in the Age of Discovery so it represents a romantic idealisation of the Portuguese past. It is designed in the shape of a caravel, showing Henry the Navigator at the prow holding a small caravel, as well as many relevant heroes of Portuguese history (Vasco da Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral - discoverer of Brazil - Fernão Magalhães - who crossed the Pacific in1520 -, the writer Camões and many others).

·      Belém Tower - Torre de Belém
Finally you can visit this tower that is alson kown as the Tower of St Vincent. It  was built in the early 16th century to be both part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.The tower is replete with Manueline decoration, symbols of the King’s power: cables encircling the building and terminating in elegant knots, armillary spheres, crosses of the Military Order of Christ and naturalistic elements such as the rhinoceros, the first such representation in stone known in Europe.

·      Edward VII Park - Parque Eduardo VII
  The Parque Eduardo VII is a french style park that was named after the visit of the King of England to Portugal in 1903. It's one of the largest parks in Lisbon and it's home of a high variety of flowers, trees, sculptures and fountains. It's located in the top of Avenida da Liberdade and from there you can have a picturesque view of the city, especially of the Downtown and the Tejo river.In this park you can also visit cold greenhouse that has lots of exotic species and hosts a lot rare species.

·      Liberty Avenue - Avenida da Liberdade
It's an avenue that connects two squares: Restauradores and Marquês de Pombal. Here you can have very pleasant walks while enjoying the beauty of the centenary trees, the fountains, cafes and some monuments. As one of the most traditional places in Portugal, it's a great place to visit since it also has history in it, represented in the statues that honor the ones who died in the First World War.

·      Restauradores Square
As we said, in the end of Liberty Avenue you can find a beautiful and huge square, Restauradores. In the middle of it, there is an obelisk that celebrates the recovery of independence in 1604. In the near by, there is a road with some traditional theatres like ”Coliseu dos Recreios” and “Teatro Politeama”.

In the Afternoon:

·     
Rossio
After lunch, you should visit one of the most famous squares of Lisbon - Rossio. There you can see many Pombaline buildings and the statue of King Peter IV. One of the most famous Pombaline buildings is Teatro D. Maria II, which is a must-see if you are a follower of this art. Let yourself get taken up in the true Lisbon spirit and taste a traditional sour cherry liqueur - Ginginha.

·      The Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Mary Major (Sé de Lisboa)
Then we suggest that you visit the oldest church of the city which is nowadays a mixture of differente architectural styles because it hás been modified several times. The main façade of the cathedral looks like a fortress, with two towers flanking the entrance and crenellations over the walls. This menacing appearance, also seen in other Portuguese cathedrals of the time, is a relic from the Reconquista period so it is a obligatory place to visit in our city.

·      Castle of São Jorge - Castelo de São Jorge
The Castle of São Jorge is a castle that was very important in the past for the defense of the city and the country. It is located in the highest hill in the historic center of the city.  I tis very pleasant to walk around the vast  castle walls, climb the stairs to the top of its defensive walls and enjoy the peace of the garden outside and panoramic view of our wonderful city.

For Dinner:
For dinner, you can go to a  “Casa de Fado” that is a restaurant where you can watch and listen to some singers of Fado, while you are eating. Fado is a music genre that was created in Portugal whose words are usually about the sea, the life of the poor and saudade (the feeling of loss and its consequent life lasting damage).

·      Botanic Garden - Jardim Botânico
  The Botanic Garden was founded in 1873 and represents a remarkable historical, cultural and scientific interest point. Its mission is to contribute to the scientific knowledge of plants (fungos) biodiversity and conservation, as well as to propose environment-managing methods. It has an area that has worldwide vegetable species such as palm trees and tropical fig trees and another area that collects rare and threatened seed species, called “Seeds Bank”.
The Botanic Garden provides an approach between you and a plant, which makes your scientific knowledge grow at the same time you have the opportunity to have a good time and relax in this beautiful place.

·      S. Pedro de Alcântara Panoramic View - Miradouro de S. Pedro de Alcântara
In this place you have an awesome panoramic view of the east side Lisbon city, making you have a perspective of its modernity and, at the same time, its tradition. There is a statue built in 1904 in honour of Eduardo Coelho, founder of the Diário de Notícias and a map in azulejo that helps the identification of some spots of the city you can watch.
  This is a meeting point for Lisbon youth because it is very near Bairro Alto, which is a nightlife area very popular between Lisbon habitants. Many young people use this place as rendez-vous before going to the bars. This situation is very different from what happens during the day, when instead of watching teens, you watch many old people playing cards in the benches protected by trees’ shadow.

For Lunch:
·      A Brasileira

A Brasileira is a café that was opened in 1905 and has this name because it was a shop selling genuine Brasilian coffe. It is one the most famous cafés in Lisbon, it has a statue of Fernando Pessoa (one of the most famous writers of our History) and is located in the middle of Chiado, and so it is the right place to go for a meal.

In the Afternoon:

·      The Glória Funicular - Elevador da Glória

The Elevador da Glória is one of the few funiculars left in Lisbon and it makes the connection between Praça dos Restauradores and Bairro Alto.
 It was built in 1885 and since then two funiculars have being making this course in both ways, carrying locals and tourist on a unique and very nice journey. With this journey, you will see some traditional streets of our city and you will get an idea about how was the life on Lisbon in the 50´s and 60´s.

·      The Church of Saint Roch - Igreja de São Roque
  The Church of Saint Roch is a Jesuist church that was built in th 16th century.It served as the Society’s home church in Portugal before the expulsion of the Jesuits from our country. It was given to Santa Casa da Misericórdia and nowadays is one of its many heritage buildings.
When the Jesuit built it, they have included some chapels, most in the Baroque style, that are absolutely magnificent. One of them is the Chapel of St. John the Baptist constructed in Rome of many precious stones and disassembled, shipped and reconstructed in São Roque; at the time it was reportedly the most expensive chapel in Europe.

·      The Carmo Convent
The Carmo Convent is a monument that was founded in 1389 by Nuno Álvares Pereira, whose church (Carmo Church) at that time the biggest church in Lisbon.The convent was ruined in the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake and the ruins of the church are still visible in the city.
Nowadays the ruined Carmo Church is used as an archaeological museum with pieces from prehistory to contemporary.

·      Santa Just Lift - Elevador de Santa Justa
Located at the end of Santa Justa Street, this lift connects the lower streets of the Baixa and Largo do Carmo. Its construction started in 1900 and was finished in 1902 but only became electrical in 1907.It is decorated in neogothic style and it has a café which affords picturesque views over the centre of Lisbon and the Tagus River at top.
